FAQ's about SAT Subject Tests

Here’s What Students Need to Know About SAT Subject Tests:

The spring semester is a big testing time for college-bound high school students, with many opting to take SAT Subject Tests in addition to the SAT or ACT.

It’s crucial to plan ahead, especially if you are taking SAT Subject Tests as careful consideration of the registration deadlines and test dates is a key component of success. Not all Subject Tests are offered on the same test dates, so students need to be aware of what tests are offered when, in addition to some other common SAT Subject Test FAQs.

When are SAT Subject Tests Offered? In most cases, the SAT Subject Tests share test dates with the SAT. For US students, the March test date is an exception: only the SAT is offered on this test date. For international students, the June date is an exception: only the SAT Subject Tests are offered on this test date.

Here are the US test dates and registration deadlines.

How many SAT Subject Tests can I take on a test date? Students can take up to three SAT Subject Tests on a single test date but cannot take the SAT and SAT Subject Tests on the same test date.

When do I have to decide which SAT Subject Tests I’m going to take? When a student registers for a test, they must tell SAT which Subject Test(s) they plan to take. However in most cases, students can change their minds on test day.

When are the Language with Listening Tests offered? The Language with Listening tests are only offered in November. It is important to note that these are always given in the first hour of testing and students can take only one Language with Listening test per test date.

I missed the registration deadline. What happens now? US students can take advantage of late registration deadlines. It is important to note that additional fees apply if you register late or make changes to your test type (for example: changing from SAT to SAT Subject Tests), center, or date after registering. Please note, there is no late registration for international test takers.

Is there a waitlist? If you miss the late registration deadline, US students may be able to register for the waitlist. However, achieving waitlist status does not guarantee you will be able to take the test. Waitlisted students are admitted after the regularly scheduled test-takers have been admitted and if there are enough test materials, staff, and seating.
